To run the race, all runners must carry the items labelled as “mandatory” in the list below.
On Friday October 3th, the Organization will inform if some of these items are finally NOT mandatory. The decision will be taken according to the most recent weather forecast.
IMPORTANT: All SUP races run in high altitude environments where the forecast is less accurate than in lower elevations, and where the weather is very unstable with sudden changes that can become extreme, such as intense heat, temperatures below 0ºC, heavy rain, hail, snow, strong wind, dense fog, thunderstorms, etc.
The definitive list of mandatory and recommended minimum material that we will publish in the web on Friday, October 3th, will be based on the latest weather forecast and therefore may be insufficient if forecast fails, or weather becomes unstable. Therefore, it is up to each participant to assess this mountain risk and decide whether to bring more additional material for the benefit of their own safety.
It is very important that each participant check the list of material below by clicking on the “more info” drop-down for each article, with details on the required characteristics.

Cup for liquids Mandatory in all races. There will be no glasses at the aid stations (including the finish line meal)
It can be any container, which may be used as a cup for drinking without wasting the liquid contained. Hands or any object that may lose liquid are not accepted. Why is it required / recommended? For sanitary and environmental protection reasons, no cups/glasses will be provided at aid stations. Examples There are many different models and brands of cups for liquids in the market. We show only one cup and container from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted
Plate and cutlery for solid food indicated as mandatory in the 100k and 42k because there will be no plates or cutlery at the aid stations (finish included).
The plate can be any container that acts as a plate and does not waste the content. Hands or any other object that loses or wastes food will not be allowed. Keep in mind that some 100k aid stations include meals that require the use of plates and cutlery such as salads, rice, pasta, etc. In the final meal of the 100k and 42k finish plates and cutlery they will also be necessary. However, if a runner prefers not to carry plates or cutlery because he has no intention of consuming those foods that require their use, THEY WILL NOT BE PENALIZED FOR NOT CARRYING THEM. The 21k and kv finish line sausages do not require plates or cutlery. Why is it required / recommended? For sanitary and environmental protection reasons, no single-use plates and cutterly will be provided at aid stations. Examples
Mobile phone with full battery and roaming activated. Mandatory at all the races
The phone has to be turned on from the race start, with active roaming, sound at maximal volume, fully charged battery and perfect working condition to withstand the entire race. Why is it required / recommended? The mobile phone allows the participant to receive and make emergency calls to the Organization (the telephone number will be noted on the back of the race bib). In addition, it may be useful to send geo-localization information via Liverun App. Therefore, the phone must be active during the entire race. It is essential to keep the battery as charged as possible, and to avoid making calls or sending data unless it is needed. Functions requesting high battery consumption such as bluetooth or wifi should be inactive. The reason why the roaming services must be active is that, given the proximity with France, some points of the course may be better served by French telephone network than by Spanish network.
External mobile phone battery Mandatory in the 100k and highly recommended in the 42k
It must have at least capacity for 2 extra charges. Why is it required / recommended? The cold on the high zones, or overnight, reduces a lot the normal duration of all the mobile phones batteries, so is probable that (even starting with the battery charged), the phone will turn off when the runner really need it in a critical moment. For example, if the fog, or a storm causes a runner to be lost, the fact of having an extra battery is the guarantee for having permanent contact with the organization during the necessary time/hours to locate him, and also to not feel alone all this time.
Liverun App Mandatory for the 100k and highly recommended for the other races with geolocation activated.
For your safety, the Livetrail app must be downloaded to the mobile phone that will be used during the race and, VERY IMPORTANT, the app’s geolocation must be activated.
Why is it required / recommended? This will allow you to activate an alarm in case of emergency, and if you have geolocation activated, we will know where you are all the time to act more efficiently.
However, being the first edition in which the APP is mandatory, we will not disqualify anyone for not having it on their mobile.
Backpack whistles are allowed if they work properly. Why is it required / recommended? The whistle is needed to call for help and facilitates being found in emergency situations.
Thermal blankets (also known as space blanket or first aid blanket) are made of heat-reflective thin plastic, silver colored on one side and golden on the other. Their design reduces heat loss or increases it depending on how it is placed to cover the person in need. The minimal surface must be 1.4 m x 2.0 m. Why is it required / recommended? Thermal blankets are mainly used to cover an injured person while waiting for help, but it can also be used to signal the position to the aerial rescue team or simply as a protection against wind and rain. The way it should be used to cover the injured person depends on the situation: To retain heat: place the silver side in contact with the body and the golden side facing outwards. It is useful in case of hypothermia, injury, having to wait in the cold… To reduce the temperature: place the golden side in contact with the body and the silver side facing outwards. It is useful in case of fever, heat stroke, having to wait in the heat…
Trail running shoes, and socks Mandatory at all the races.
They must cover THE WHOLE foot. Sandals are not allowed. Why is it required / recommended? It is necessary to consider that in many sections of the route the ground is technical and stony, fact that makes essential to use a shoe that protects THE WHOLE foot of blows and wounds, besides having a good grip. It is also important to note that many tracks are in high mountain, where it can be very cold (especially at night), so it is imperative to have the foot well insulated using good shoes and socks, because it is one of the areas of our body where we lose more temperature. Examples There are many different models and brands of trail running shoes in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.
Headlamp + spare batteries Mandatory in all races during night hours: From 18:00h to 8:00h
The headlamp can be worn on the head, leaving the hands free. When packing your headlamp, ensure that it works properly and its batteries are fully charged. Check that it is turned off when inside your backpack, to ensure it works properly when needed. Examples There are many different brands and models of headlamps in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor PETZL as an example. You can find more info HERE
To wear in a visible part of the back (such as in the backpack). Why is it required / recommended? A red light on the back can help to locate a runner lost during the night, and also allow him to orient himself and get back on race track, thanks to the lights of other runners.
Impermeable breathable jacket with hood It can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
With breathable insulating membrane such as Gore-Tex, Clima Pro, Water Proff, MemBrain, H2O, Hyvent or similar and sealed seams to sustain bad weather conditions in mountain. The jacket must not have sections composed of fabric which is not waterproof, but the air vents (under the arm, across the back), which do not appear to affect the waterproof-ness of the garment are accepted. IMPERMEABILITY: At least 10,000 mm Schmerber water column (*) BREATHABILITY: RET score equal or below 13; or MTVR score equal or over 5.000 (*) (*) Consult the values of your jacket with your retailer/brand. In case to carry the impermeable jacket, it will not be necessary to take the windstopper jacket. Why is it required / recommended? The impermeable breathable jacket with hood may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour, depending on the weather forecast. Why a hood? The head is one of the parts of the body with greater heat loss. This is why it must be protected from the rain, wind or cold when needed. Why impermeable? Storms and unexpected rain episodes are very frequent in mountains. Having the body wet for a long time may cause serious problems. Examples There are many different models and brands of impermeable breathable jackets with hood in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Windstopper jacket Mandatory during all the race, except when the impermeable breathable jacket with hood is required, or if the runner carries it by default.
A windstopper jacket should cover the whole trunk (including the arms), and its function is to protect from the wind. The hood is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. Why is it required / recommended? This clothing gear is the minimum needed to protect a runner from the temperature drop caused by the wind, typical at the highest points of the course even in days of good weather conditions. The windstopper jacket does NOT offer enough protection from cold or rain. Depending on the weather conditions, or after a certain hour, it may be mandatory to carry gear offering superior protection, such as a polar fleece or an impermeable breathable jacket with hood. In that case, if a runner carries an impermeable breathable jacket with hood, he/she will be exempt of carrying a windstopper jacket. Examples There are many different models and brands of windstopper jackets in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Thermal insulation clothing It can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
The thermal insulation clothing must cover the whole trunk, with long sleeves until the wrist. It’s function is to help keep the body warm and sustain low temperatures. It can be a thick thermal shirt of between 150 and 300 g (depending the runner’s size), or a polar fleece jacket. Cotton is not permitted. Why is it required / recommended? The thermal clothing may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour, depending on the weather forecast. Keep in mind that extreme temperature oscillations are common in mountains, and they can happen suddenly. Also, there are many situations that may force a runner to slow his/her pace, or even to stop during the race. These situations, such as suffering an injury, overexertion, helping a runner in need, etc…may cause the body temperature to drop quickly before arriving to the closest aid station or while waiting for help. Examples There are many different models and brands of thermal shirts and polar fleece jackets in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Trousers (Waterproof) They can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
Totally impermeable (at least 10,000 mm Schmerber water column), and it is recommended that they also are breathable, although this is not mandatory. Why is it required / recommended? Trousers or leggings are not useful when they are wet or in windy conditions. Therefore, and depending on the weather forecast, waterproof trousers may be mandatory from a certain hour or during the entire event. Examples There are many different models and brands of Waterproof trousers in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Leggings/Trousers (Warm) They can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
They can be short if they totally cover the legs when combined with socks, without leaving the knees exposed. Panties are not admitted. Why is it required / recommended? Leggings or trousers (totally covering the legs) may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour, depending on the weather forecast. Keep in mind that extreme temperature oscillations are common in mountains, and they can happen suddenly. Also, there are many situations that may force a runner to slow his/her pace, or even to stop during the race. These situations, such as suffering an injury, overexertion, helping a runner in need, etc… may cause the body temperature to drop quickly before arriving to the closest aid station or while waiting for help. Wearing waterproof pants DOES NOT NECESSARILY invalidate the obligation to take leggins/trousers (warm). Examples There are many different models and brands of Leggings or trousers (long) in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Warm hat It can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
Its function is to keep all the head warm and protected from cold. Why is it required / recommended? The head is the part of the body with greater heat loss. Therefore, the warm hat or thermal tubular may be mandatory during the entire race or from a certain hour depending on the weather forecast. The Buff/Tubular NOT NECESSARILY invalidate the obligation to wear a warm hat, as it may be insufficient to keep the head warm in it is very cold . Examples There are many different models and brands of Warm hats in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Buff/tubular It can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
It must cover the head completely. Why is it required / recommended? It protects the head from the sun, sunstrokes and heat stroke. It is also helpful to prevent heat loss in conditions of moderate cold and wind. Carrying the warm hat (which protects from cold) does NOT NECESSARILY exempt the runner to carry the cap or buff/tubular because it does not protect from sunstrokes. Examples There are many different models and brands of buff/tubulars in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
Gloves They can be mandatory in any race, from an specific hour or during all the race, depending on the weather.
They must totally cover the hands (including the fingers). It is recommended that they are made of an impermeable material. The rubber or latex gloves are not accepted. Why is it required / recommended? The extremities, and the hands in particular, may get cold easily. For this reason, gloves will be mandatory during the entire event or from a certain hour depending on the weather forecast. Examples There are many different models and brands of gloves in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
They can be one or more rigid containers, bags or a combination of both. In any case they should provide a total minimal capacity of 1 L. Examples There are many different models and brands of drinking containers and/or hydration packs in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example. Any equivalent from another brand will be equally accepted.
GPS (handheld or watch) with the latest version of the official race tracks Highly recommended in all races.
The organization will mark the route during the 5 days prior to the race, and will make a final review a few hours before starting the race. Why is it required / recommended? However, it does NOT guarantee that all the route is correctly marked during the entire race since there are circumstances (out of the organization control) that may unmark some parts of the route for a time, until the organization arrives to solve the problem. Also, It must be taken into account that even with a correct marking, a poor visibility easily can get us lost. So, it is highly recommended to carry a GPS watch with us. Examples Given that there are countless brands and models of GPS on the market, here we only show an example of a GPS watch from our sponsor SUUNTO.
Appropriate to the volume of the material and pace of the participant. Examples There are many different models and brands of Backpacks in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example.
Why is it required / recommended? Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and chloride develop physiological functions, so athletes must replace them along with the liquid they are losing during the race. Especially sodium that is very important for athletes, as it plays a key role in stimulating thirst and fluid retention. In all refreshment points there will be water and electrolytes FINISHER. However, it is recommended that participants bring a reserve of water and electrolytes to manage a possible dehydration in the longest and hardest tracks. And especially in warm days Examples There are many different models and brands of electrolytes and/or mineral salts in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor FINISHER as an example.
Strongly recommended in case of rain or snow. Examples There are many different models and brands of walking sticks in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor SALOMON as an example
Energy bars, gels, fruits… Why is it required / recommended? Although there will be enough food in all the refreshments, it is recommended that the participants bring a small food reserve to face possible setbacks. Examples There are many different models and brands of energy bars and gels in the market. We show a brief selection from our sponsor FINISHER as an example.
¿Por qué es obligatorio/recomendado? Según cual sea la situación epidemiológica que haya el día de la carrera, la obligatoriedad de la mascarilla podría variar.
